DESCRIPTIONS & INFORMATION

The Ecouges canyon, located in the Vercors massif, is one of the most beautiful canyons in France. And not for nothing! Just a stone's throw from Grenoble and not far from Lyon, it's a canyon that can be enjoyed all day, with a varied and highly technical upper section.

The upper part is a succession of abseils in a gorge a hundred metres deep. We'll take the time to explain the rudiments of abseiling in a canyon before plunging into this fault. One waterfall follows another in an extraordinary setting and the abseiling lines will be more or less watered depending on the flow of water at the time. The exit via this magnificent 65m vertical drop leaves no room for vertigo!

After a good break and a picnic by the river, we move on to the lower part of the Ecouges canyon (Ecouges 2), where the abseils seem much smaller (just 28m!). The route then becomes a fun canyoning experience, with a succession of jumps and slides in beautiful natural pools.

It's also possible to do just the upper section for half a day.
The whole of the Ecouges canyon requires good physical condition and vertigo is forbidden. A good command of abseiling techniques (climbing or canyoning) is also welcome

EQUIPMENT

Provided :
VERTIC'O provides all the equipment necessary for progression and safety. A 5mm neoprene wetsuit, neoprene socks, harness, helmet and descender. Bags, ropes and waterproof canisters are also provided.
All our equipment complies with PPE standards and is regularly checked.

A swimming costume
A pair of closed shoes (trainers or hiking boots)
A bottle of water (1.5 litres for two people)
Energy bars
A lanyard if you need to take your glasses with you
A picnic if you are going on a day trip

Here are a few important rules for canyoning:

You must be able to swim and not be afraid of water.

You must not have any serious medical problems (heart or respiratory problems, back problems, prostheses or other serious antecedents).
Asthmatics must also be informed at the time of booking.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1I've never done canyoning before, can I sign up for the Intégrale des Ecouges?

To do this part of the Ecouges canyon, it's best to have already mastered abseiling (canyoning or climbing). However, it may be accessible to novices who like thrills, but in this case we'll need to discuss it on the phone beforehand.

2Are there any jumps in the upper part of Les Ecouges?

No, none in this part. It's really a series of beautiful abseils in a narrow gorge, but there will be plenty of time to make up for it in the lower part in the afternoon.

3How high is the highest abseil?

65 m, the last of the upper section.

4Can I only do the upper part of the Ecouges canyon?

Yes, of course. The 2 parts are very different and separated by the road.

5What if we're a group and not everyone wants to do the upper section?

That's fine, you can set off in the morning on the upper section with some people and pick up the rest of the group at the end of the upper section/beginning of the lower section. We can all have a picnic together between the 2 sections.

After contacting VERTIC'O and getting the go-ahead from Charlie or Xavier about your experience of the Ecouges canyon, you'll receive an email with full details of the day. We'll ask you a few questions to find out what you're looking for so that this canyon is a treat for everyone ! Everything's set, so we'll see you on the big day for a very special way to discover the Vercors massif !

You'll meet Charlie or Xavier early in the morning at the canyon car park. They'll explain how the day will run, how to manage the vehicles and the picnic, and then we'll get kitted out in canyoning style before driving up to the car park upstream of the Ecouges canyon, where the upper section starts. This car shuttle will save us that long, tedious approach walk on the road.

Before you set foot in the water, we'll give you a full briefing on the canyoning activity, with particular emphasis on abseiling, which is the main theme of the morning. We'll explain how we'll be moving through the gorge and we'll also involve you in managing the ropes, so that you get a feel for the technical nature of the upper part of the Ecouges canyon. So you'll also be involved in your day ! A series of abseils will take you to the exit waterfall, the longest roped descent of the morning.

The afternoon will be much quieter in terms of technical difficulties and will give way to the fun side of canyoning, the lower part of the Ecouges canyon. There will be a few more abseils, then jumps and slides before we start the walk back to the car park where we met up that morning. After undocking, we'll take the time to pick up the vehicle left at the car park upstream of the canyon. You will then have covered the whole of the Ecouges canyon, a sporty way to discover the Vercors massif, the closest massif to Grenoble and Lyon.
